Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (July 31, 2024)

Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! This is a bit of a funny time to become a Meychan (めいちゃん) fan because after releasing his new album earlier this month he went on hiatus. While he does have plans to return at some point, in some way, we won’t be seeing any new music from Meychan for…well, who knows how long. So, yes, in that sense it’s a funny time to become a new fan. On the other hand, it’s a great time to go back and listen to the many, many songs released already! So, despite the timing, today I want to promote my latest obsession: Meychan! I’m not even going to try to describe his music because there are too many styles, several songs sound completely different than others, and I’m not great at describing music even when it falls into a clearly defined genre. As usual, I recommend you just start listening. The new album, Yakisoba Pan 「やきそばパン」 is a great place to start (a great album AND a great meal! Really, I love a good yakisoba pan). Here are two very different songs to give you a sample. Enjoy!

And, as always…

What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?

Happy Wednesday! 🙂
