The big wrestling news this past week was Hulk Hogan speaking at the RNC and… yeah, fuck him. Linda McMahon also spoke there and claimed that Trump gave WWE their best storylines and highest rating, which hilariously drove Dave Meltzer up the wall. I usually get annoyed at Meltzer for taking things so literally but I don’t mind it here.
Other big stories:
-TNA Slammiversary was over the weekend and it was a great show. The highlight was Mike Bailey and Mustafa Ali’s X Division match. There’s been some criticism over the match doing yet another Montreal Screwjob reference but the match was so great otherwise, I’m not annoyed.
-AEW content is starting to show up on HBO Max, albeit overseas. Hopefully it joins them in the U.S.
-There have been some rumblings that AEW and WB are nearing a deal.
-Raw and NXT will be on Syfy the next two weeks due to the Olympics.
-CM Punk is cleared to wrestle, with him set to wrestle Drew McIntyre at SummerSlam (with Seth Rollins as the referee).
-Bobby Lashley and MVP are expected to leave WWE soon. People are wondering what this will mean for Omos, as MVP has been his manager.
-The G1 Climax has started and it’s off to a great start, with Konosuke Takeshita’s match with Yota Tsuji being an early favorite.
-You can tell that WWE knows that Stephanie Vaquer is going to be a huge benefit, they’ve been giving her shout out on Raw and NXT and even featured some of the NXT women watching her match with Isla Dawn.
-Pat McAfee is getting some criticism over comments made by his friends. They’re going to be DLC characters in WWE2K ’24 and fans are annoyed that they’re getting in over actual wrestlers, particularly NXT wrestlers. One of his friends made a comment about how the wrestlers in NXT are “lowers that nobody’s heard of,” which Pat laughed at. Fans were pissed and even NXT wrestler Karmen Petrovic chimed in to register his displeasure.
-Tony Schiavone received the Gordon Solie award by the George Tragos/Lou Thesz Hall of Fame. Very well deserved.
-Blood and Guts is tonight and it should be a good show.
