The Wednesday Politics Thread Says “Don’t Invent a Guy”

Some time ago, one user (I forget who, so apologies for not being able to give credit) mentioned the idea of “Don’t invent a guy.” That is to say, don’t create scenarios in your head that you feel the need to imagine and imagine a response to. Sometimes there’s a tendency here to say “I bet Republicans [or Trump or Musk or whoever] will do [this crazy thing]”. When really, they do enough awful things that we don’t have to start dreaming about all the scenarios they might do. And in the wake of Harris becoming the new Democratic candidate, I’ve seen a lot of “I bet Republicans will do [this racist thing]” and maybe we could just… not do that. There’s no need to invent a guy or craft up these elaborate scenarios that might happen.

Along with that, even when they DO crazy/racist things, we don’t have to broadcast every instance of that to the thread either! Think before you post. Does this add to the conversation? Is this meaningful? Or is this just plastering more crap that Politicados of Color will have to see again and again and again? Some have already asked for people to stop sharing every bad take, and I hope you will heed that.

So that’s my challenge for the PT, today and into the future. Don’t invent a guy. Don’t broadcast every bad take. Share things that are substantive and discussion worthy, or at least funny. And, of course, be kind and thoughtful today. Cheers.
