Color Outside the Lines steps up to the political Glass Cliff?

Hello! Welcome to COTL, a discussion place for BIPOC. Posted the first 3 Wednesdays of the month

Thread Rules

  1. We ask that only those who identify as people of color participate in this discussion. White Avocados, while valued members of this community, should remain in ‘lurk’ mode.
  2. Shaming and hateful speech are unacceptable.
  3. Please keep potentially traumatic content safely behind spoiler tags.
  4. Nobody on this thread is more or less a person of color than anyone else. (We will not set clearly delineated boundaries on who qualifies as a ‘person of color.’ As a starting point, this thread uses the definition of ‘non-European heritage of sufficient prominence to affect one’s navigation of a society built on white normativity.’ However, we recognize that there are identities which skirt either side of the divide. If people feel that they meaningfully experience the identity of being a person of color, then they are welcome to participate.)

This will be a fairly heavy political thread. There’s been multiple elections over here in Europe & another big one coming up in November for all you Americados. It’s hard not to see a racial element in many of these elections? With immigration being a key issue, but none of the parties actually dealing with the issues inherent to that: corruption, collusion & climate crises?!

From the far-right popularity of people like Le Pen & Nigel Farage,* to the difficulties in the Dems shrugging off a possibly cognitively struggling Biden and letting Kamala Harris run? I get the sense that nobody wants this for a myriad of reasons, but possibly related to the main subject of the thread?

*Nigel’s Reform party (new version of BNP, UKIP, etc) won a bigger percentage of voter share than anyone wants to discuss. It actually may have caused the Tories loss, more than people helping Labour win. This does not bode well for the UK given the outright racism & homophobia inherent to the Reform party (TW/CW):

Some excellent reporting by Channel 4, on some truly stupid idiots close to Farage… and these guys came second in a lot seats across the UK 🤦🏾‍♀️. Labour better shape up or we can all guess what the future could possibly hold 😔.

Something that popped up in the PT thread a few months ago, came to mind during these elections & that’s the concept of the ‘Glass Cliff.’

It’s essentially the ‘Glass ceiling‘ that women struggle to break through, but in the case of businesses & in this case politics: it’s the handing over of the keys of power to women, people of colour, etc (who would otherwise not get a look in) primarily promoting during periods of struggle (& likely failure) within a business/country.

I highly recommend giving this article a read:

https://www.bbc.com/future/article/20220204-the-danger-of-the-glass-cliff-for-women-and-people-of-colour

The evidence isn’t quite clear, but it’s interesting/despicable that as usual women get the hard end of the stick & tend to get promoted during difficult times, though the other side of the coin is at least they get promoted? There’s good & bad to it all?

It was a note of honor for a lot of people (especially Indians) that Rishi Sunak was the first South Asian British Prime Minister & I think most people wouldn’t hold the election against him. For the most part… except for a disastrous campaign & him clearly being completely out of sync with most of the general public.1

Calculated? To what end? Make him seem more sympathetic? Probably should have just done his job better, but honestly the Tories are in such a mess that they’re gonna need to clear house & likely come back more authoritative & hard right? 2
I can’t believe the Tories still exist! Around a quarter of a billion pounds spent on the Rwanda deportation scheme & yet not a single immigrant has been deported! In-fucking-sane!

Poor Rishi Sunak. I guess he’ll have to go cry into his billions, over in California (if he leaves)?3 Speaking of all yours, apparently Rishi called the election now, so as to catch Nigel Farage off guard & reduce the Reform party vote? However that seems to have backfired quite spectacularly as Rishi probably should have waited till November, when Nigel will be eagerly sucking D for Trump on that campaign trail. Christ what a complete fail that Farage won over his constituency 😒 (I should probably avoid Clacton). As if that prick wasn’t bad enough getting a MEP pension from being a European MP (despite leading the charge to leave the EU) 🤦🏾‍♀️.

Also worth noting, all three notably first POC British leaders faced serious calls to step down from power in the last few months, with only Welsh First Minister Vaughan Gething surviving (by simply saying the vote of no confidence wasn’t legit cos 2 ministers were ill 😅):

“Dishi” Rishi & former Scottish First Minister (& SNP leader) Humza Yousaf look on at Vaughan & wonder how?

To wrap up my minor British election coverage: Best case scenario, we in the UK end up with a plaster on a gaping wound, but one of many to come? However, in all likelihood we’ll probably end up with a partial US-style private healthcare system 🤮, as Labour continues the Tories attempts to kill the NHS 4 & the middle class continues to get wiped out, because nobody is doing fuck all about the top of the pyramid scheme (that is late stage capitalism)… & people wonder why Le Pen & the far right are succeeding in France 5 as they utilise the immigration issue to garner support & power (sound familiar 😒). Oh… as well as thoroughout Europe & the Western world 🤦🏾‍♀️.

I hope I’m wrong. Deer god please! Use your antlers my lord & saviour to turn my predictions into nonsensical ramblings/drivel. 🤷🏾‍♀️😅

As always feel free to talk about whatever else you feel like. Kendrick burying Drake again maybe? This should be the last of my personalised rambling threads, for awhile. 😋

I hope you have a wonderful day! 🤗
