Welcome to the start of The Avocado Movie Club! The plan is to watch a movie and then discuss it, big surprise, right? According to the poll I linked in the movie thread earlier this week, the majority of the voters would prefer to have a discussion every other week, which should give everyone plenty of time to watch the selected movie. 

This means the first discussion thread will be on July 12th, but before we do that, we gotta pick some movies to watch! We’ll follow the album club format, with everyone selecting one movie that I’ll randomize into a list. The main complication here is that there’s an even split between having a themed month every month vs. every other month, so we’re going to go with my original plan, which is to alternate between themes months and ones where anything goes.

In the selection thread below, respond with one movie you would like everyone to watch, and if you feel like it aligns with one of the monthly themes write it in brackets beside it. This only leaves us with 2-3 movies per theme though, so if there ends up being more movies than themes, I’ll draw however many fit the month, and the remainder will be added to the regular pool, if that’s cool with everyone. Either way, we’ll get around to everyone’s movie eventually. Again, still taking suggestions on how to organize things, nothing has to be set in stone. 

Here are the current plans for monthly themes:

February: Black Directors, for Black History Month

April: Directorial Debuts

June: LGBTQ+ Films, for Pride

August: Blockbuster Flops

October: Horror, for Halloween

December: Holidays (Not just Christmas, anything in/around December works)  

We can start switching themes around and such after we run through them the first time. I’ll also try to provide a small write-up for the movie each week, nothing too in-depth, just some background detail and maybe a prompt or two, but if your movie is up next and you want to write something instead, let me know ahead of time. I’ll list streaming and rental options for the chosen films as well. We may be able to arrange some streams via something like Rabbit if some movies aren’t easily available for everyone to watch.

I’ll leave selections open for 48 hours and I’ll @ everyone I can in the thread with the first movie, and I’ll leave reminders in the Weekly Movie Thread as well. I can share the master list afterwards if that’s preferred too.
