Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (June 19, 2024)

Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! The temperature is rising where I live, which means it’s time to start watching some good horror. Actually, the reason I watched this particular movie is because we just happened to have the Criterion Channel on when it started. The movie is Onibaba (鬼婆). I had never heard of it before, so I had no idea what I was about to experience, but I’m glad I watched it! The horror elements weren’t over-the-top terrifying, but I definitely felt suspense and dread at times. To provide a brief summary, I guess I’d say this: the movie takes place during a civil war in Japan, somewhere outside of Kyoto, and two women try to survive as best they can. Here’s a trailer if you want to know more:

Have you seen this movie? If so, what did you think?

And, as always…

What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?

Happy Wednesday! 🙂
