Cedilla Night Thread (June 7th)

The cedilla is a diacritical mark that hangs down from a letter like a little tail. Here’s one now, chilling by itself: ¸

Connected to a C, you probably recognize it from words like façade or açai, and it’s that latter context that makes this secretly another cocktail ingredient thread. That’s right, the orthography was merely a façade!

Cedilla Açai Liqueur is a product of Maison Leblon, one of Brazil’s premiere distillers of Cachaça (another cedilla-using liquor that is a close relative of rum). Its rich, tart berry flavor makes it an excellent sub for Chambord when you want to add a little more zing than boring old raspberries can provide. At 21% ABV it can also be sipped chilled or on the rocks as a dessert drink, or mixed into ginger ale.

Cocktail Recipe: Jet Juice

An opening-day drink at Oga’s Cantina at Galaxy’s Edge, Jet Juice is a potent potable of uncommon strength. The tart açai flavor is the perfect bridge between the sweetness of the grape juice and the spicy kick of the Ancho Reyes. While it’s no longer available in the park in its original format, I still make the old recipe at home to get me through the Star Wars Holiday Special every Life Day. In a cocktail shaker with ice add:

  • 1.5 oz. Maker’s Mark or similar bourbon (I use Knob Creek)
  • 0.75 oz. Cedilla Açai Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz. Ancho Reyes Chili Liqueur
  • 0.75 oz. fresh lemon juice
  • 0.75 oz. white grape juice

Shake thoroughly and strain into a chilled rocks glass or coupe.
