Battle of the (Fictional) Bands: Results

Time to announce the winners!

In third place, from the film O Brother, Where Art Thou?, hot damn, it’s the Soggy Bottom Boys! The group formed when escaped convict Ulysses Everett McGill and his partners Pete and Delmar, along with a young guitar player named Tommy Johnson, record a song to make some quick cash while searching for treasure and avoiding the authorities. The band’s song would become a smash hit, and the band themselves would go on to become instrumental in the reelection of Pappy O’Daniel to the governor’s office. The boys defeated the teenage rock’n’roll sensations, The Wonders, by a score of 21-11.

Coming in second place with only 13 votes in the final match, we have Dewey Cox, who’s life and music were the subject of Walk Hard: The Dewey Cox Story. A natural born talent, Cox started off by winning his school talent show at the age of 14, which launched a decades-long and genre-spanning career, ultimately culminating in his death just three minutes after completing his final performance and being presented with a lifetime achievement award.

And finally, the champion of the Battle of the (Fictional) Bands, is none other than the Muppet Show house band, Dr. Teeth and the Electric Mayhem! Though it was a close call, as they only scored 19 votes to win over Dewey Cox, by far their lowest total in the tournament and actually fewer votes than the 3rd place band received. Dr. Teeth and his bandmates Floyd Pepper, Zoot, Janice, Lips, and Animal first appeared in the pilot to The Muppet Show, and they’ve since appeared in nearly all of the Muppets’ movie and specials in some form or other. Most recently, they can be seen on their own series on Disney+, The Muppets Mayhem.

And that’s that! Thank you all for being such a great audience, and keep on rockin’!
