Mad Max: Beyond Thunderdome–aka Mad Max: Return to Never Land aka Mad Max: The One With Evil Tina Turner In It–is widely regarded as the worst film in the franchise. Is it? I dunno. It’s at least by far the most ridiculous (which is really saying something for a George Miller production), barely feeling related to Mad Max 2 (which, in fairness, felt barely related to the first Mad Max) and playing more like a much dryer version of Waterworld. The late Turner’s performance is certainly…well, let’s just say she chews the scenery, spits it out, and then chews it up all over again. I’m also not really sure what she wanted, but then again, I’ve only ever watched the movie once. Didn’t Mad Max bring an army of kids to take her down or something?
That being said, Turner’s presence kept audiences in theater seats, as Beyond Thunderdome went beyond what the first two films made at the American box office combined, bad reviews be damned. This was of course elevated by the popularity of the movie’s hit single (yeah, I know, the words “hit single” and “Mad Max” don’t normally belong together) “We Don’t Need Another Hero”–which makes sense, I guess, since the last thing Turner’s villain wants would be, in fact, another hero. Because she’s a villain. Also, I’m realizing how little I recall about this flick. There was the big dome fight, then the waterfall with the kids, and then another desert car chase. The end?
Have a MAD night, y’all!
