Box Office of the Planet of the Apes — Box Office Report for May 10th-May 12th 2024

Surprising absolutely no one on, well, the planet, Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes ruled the box office with $56 million this weekend. That’s exactly in line with where projections had it, for better or worse, and while we’re looking at some very strong numbers here, I’m slightly concerned over how these monkeys swing forward. I can’t find precise budget information on Kingdom of the Crystal Skull of the Planet of the Apes, but with those visuals, there’s no way it was cheap. At minimum I would assume we’re talking about the $125-$150 million ballpark, although unlike the previous reboot entries, there is no notable star power here, so that might have helped with the price tag. The good news for Kingdom of Heaven of the Planet of the Apes is that Memorial Day weekend is just two weeks away, so hopefully it’s golden bananas all around for the future of this one (especially since the team behind it–sighs–announced they want to make five more films for this story).

The only other newcomer this weekend is Not Another Church Movie, “starring” Jamie Foxx and Mickey Rourke, although both of them are barely in the film. What this actually is is a parody of Tyler Perry movies, and while they are certainly ripe for lampooning, this is showing up very late for the party, which is probably why no one showed up for this. And I mean that almost literally, as Church Movie made only $300,000 this weekend, which is just pathetic. Maybe Vivica A. Fox will say yes to that Cool Cat Saves the Kids sequel after all.
