This week, it’s time to get your stinkin’ paws on some damn dirty apes as we see the debut of a new Planet of the Apes trilogy. We get our first entry with Kingdom of the Planet of the Apes.

The Planet of the Apes films occupy a curious place in film history. It is a movie about a planet ruled by apes, and humans are treated as less than. There is a council that does the whole no hear, no see, no speak thing. There is an Ape Law. There are currently nine movies in the series with incredibly long titles, the last being War for the Planet of the Apes.

The most amazing aspect of these films? By and large, they take the concept with deathly seriousness.

The framework becomes a way to explore civil rights, prejudice, and nuclear war. The first five movies paint a bleak picture: that nothing can be done to escape the inevitable destruction of the world. The recent films are perhaps less bleak, but depict a world where the time of humans is over. And Tim Burton asks: what if Mark Wahlberg was arrested by ape cops?

Today’s bonus prompt: what is your favorite moment in the Planet of the Apes films?
