Welcome to The Avocado’s weekly discussion of Japanese pop culture! Looking for a completed manga you can read in English that is only 6 volumes? Then I recommend you check out Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty (おはよう、いばら姫). This shoujo manga is by the same mangaka as A Condition Called Love, which just had its best anime episode so far (in my humble opinion), so today feels like a good time for me to feature this work. While both manga share a similar style and vibe, the story is very different. Wake Up, Sleeping Beauty focuses on a high school boy, Tetsu Misato, who starts working part-time at the mansion of a wealthy family with a big secret: their daughter has been hidden away in a smaller guesthouse for most of her life. Why? Well, that’s part of the mystery of this very cool manga, so I won’t spoil it here! But I will say there are some horror elements to this story, and the characters have to struggle against some heavy realities, but there’s also lots of heart, romance, and friendship. It’s the kind of mix that only someone as talented as Megumi Morino can pull off! If any of that sounded intriguing, check it out!

Not exactly your average “meet cute”. This is from the first few pages of Volume 1.
And, as always…
What have you been watching/reading/playing/eating/listening to lately?
Happy Wednesday! 🙂
