Newcomers Can’t Stop Civil War from Spreading — Box Office Report for April 19th-April 21st 2024

Well, this isn’t going to be a very exciting report…

Our number one movie, again, is Civil War. The non-political political thriller (I don’t get it either) made $11 million according to current studio estimates, which brings its total to $44 million after two weeks. I guess those posters advertising a completely different film paid off. Look, I don’t know what else to say. Do I make a “both sides” joke? A Trump comment? Help me out here. This supposed actioner just isn’t much fun for me to talk about. Sorry?

Elsewhere, we have our newcomers Abigail and The Ministry of Ungentlemanly Warfare. Both got good reviews, both are titles I would rather see than Civil War, and both are underperforming. Of the two, Abigail’s $10 million has the slight advantage over the $9 million Ungentlemanly Basterds brought home (that includes sneak previews from last weekend), but really, both of these films are going to be done by the time we reach May, which is kind of a bummer. Likewise, Spy X Family Code: White fell way below expectations with a take of only $4.8 million. I actually really expected for this to dethrone Civil War, but clearly this isn’t Demon Slayer. Too bad.

As for leftovers, Godzilla X Kong: The New Empire now has $171 million, which makes it the second-highest grossing “Monsterverse” outing to date. Similarly, Kung Fu Panda 4 (which YouTube keeps trying to desperately convince me is universally hated, for reasons) has amassed $180 million, enough to secure it as the second-biggest film in the franchise. Seriously, that’s not bad at all when you consider that the kids going to this weren’t even born when the original Kung Fu Panda was in theaters. Also, Ghostbusters: Frozen Empire surpassed the $100 million mark. Cool.
