Did you know that Digital Eclipse has been around since 1992? They first hit the scene with Mac ports of classic arcade games like Joust, and ports would prove to be their bread and butter over the years, alongside some Game Boy Color and then Advance development. They then went by Backbone Entertainment for a while, and you know what they did under that name? That’s right, they ported arcade games, this time primarily for the 360, a true golden age of digital gaming. They then pivoted back to Digital Eclipse again in 2015 (there’s more to it than that, but lets move on) and turned their decades of strength into something even more special, with more robust classic game collections such as SNK 40th Anniversary Collection, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles: The Cowabunga Collection, and the new frontier of classic compilations/retrospectives with The Making of Karateka.
A long history of quality work, an engine designed to help make great ports, an inspired reimagining of what their core work entails, and no controversies on their Wikipedia page. Seems like a win to me.
What about you all? Any fond memories of a Digital Eclipse? Dreams for what they may pay homage to in the future? Any plans for the Actual Eclipse? As for me, I’ve got a dorky Moon Pie Eclipse kit, with mini moon pies (chocolate, unfortunately), ISO-certified glasses, and stickers. And a meeting on my calendar for when I plan to stand in the yard and look up like an idiot.
