Comic Book Review – Weapon X-Men #1

Weapon X-Men #1

Writer – Christos Cage

Artist – Yildiray Cinar

Are you a fan of Wolverine? Are you a fan of stories that take place in the multiverse? Well then, Weapon X-Men is right up your alley! New Comic Book Day for the week of March 6th, 2024 was a big one. I left the store with nine new comics. Ten, if you count the free Marvel Must Haves issue. (Worth picking up if your store still has copies they are giving way). This was one of them and the first one I read over the weekend of March 9th

Phoenix has assembled different versions of Wolverine to combat the evil of Onslaught. The first stop on the trail of this menace is an Earth where humans and mutants worked together to repel an alien invasion. Mutantkind is led by Jean Grey and Magneto and the Wolverines are greeted by that world’s version of the Uncanny Avengers. Can these two groups work together to find and end Onslaught’s path of destruction before it’s too late?

This isn’t the first time a group of Wolverines were gathered together to save the multiverse. There first team-up was in Exiles Vol 1 #85. When I heard about Weapon X-Men, I thought it was going to tie-in with Sabretooth War, which is taking place in the pages of Wolverine. Victor Creed has assembled different versions of himself to torture and kill Wolverine.  I thought that the Weapon X-Men would be the group to counteract and fight the other Sabretooths but I was incorrect.

I do like the mix of Wolverines in this first issue especially the introduction of Jane Howlett. She is the ultimate fish out of water since she was taken from her Earth, which is currently set in the year 1909. The revelation of how Onslaught is created is one I didn’t see coming but a nice change to what we saw previously. The one question you need to keep in the back of your mind is – can all these different versions of Wolverine coexist and work together for a common cause? You’ll get your answer by the end of the issue. One other question to keep in mind – what will happen if one of these Wolverines fall in battle? Will a new version join the ranks or will the group carry on without their fallen comrade?

Marvel Comics is celebrating the 50th anniversary of Logan’s first appearance in 2024 and this book is a nice way to kick off the milestone. I’m not sure if this is a mini-series or an ongoing but I’m already looking forward to the next issue, which will be released on Wednesday April 10th, 2024

Next Issue – “One Happy Wolverine! Across almost every universe in existence, Wolverine is driven by pain, by the sins of his past and his future. But on one world – the very one that Onslaught has targeted next for annihilation – has a Wolverine unlike any other. A Wolverine…who got what he wanted. And for the Logan from Earth-X? That news just might be the claw in the coffin. The Phoenix’s handpicked Band of Logans go to war!”
