Night Thrasher #1
Writer – J. Holtham
Artist – Nelson Daniel
Remix Part 1 – “Don’t Call It a Comeback”
My friend Oscar and I are trying to get back to our little reading group. We are trying to read one graphic novel and one new comic a month. He picked the graphic novel for February (X-Men – God Loves, Man Kills) and I picked Night Thrasher #1.
Dwayne Taylor returns to New York City to attend the funeral of Andrew Cord, the father of New Warrior Silhouette. Dwayne has other personal business to attend to while in the area. He has decided to shut down the Taylor Foundation once and for all, drawing the ire of those that saw the foundation as a necessity for the city. When Dwayne and Councilman Ezra Ikolo try to discuss the future of the foundation, a department store is ransacked in a coordinated attack by teens in black hoodies. Their gang and its leader, The O.G., must be stopped and Dwayne dons his armor as Night Thrasher once again to mete out justice.
After reading this issue, it sparked an interest to go back and check out the New Warriors from the 90s. I’d like to see how Dwayne has grown from his early days as a superhero to the here and now. One thing is for certain – although society has positively progressed from the 90s until now, it is not absolute or encompass and include all people. This is evident when you see what transpires after the robbery and how it involves Dwayne and Ezra.
There is a bonus story featuring Silhouette and the time she spends with her dying father. I enjoyed this feature and although the situation is dark and grim, it ends on a hopeful, poignant note.
I will have to check with Oscar to see if he liked or disliked my pick. I did enjoy this first issue and the complications in both Dwayne’s personal and costumed lives. I’m sure they will intertwine at some point and I’m curious to see if that will happen or not.
This was a nice reintroduction to Night Thrasher and the New Warriors and I’m sure if sales are good, we might see a new group formed by Dwayne and Silhouette in the near future. At the very least, the mini-series could leave the door open for a sequel or we could see Night Thrasher and Silhouette guest star in other ongoing series from time to time.
Next Issue – “Night Thrasher has been betrayed by one of his oldest and closest allies as his battle with the new crime lord THE O.G. intensifies! As his reignited relationship with Silhouette also heats up, Night Thrasher takes on a new look for a new era. But his war with the O.G. may end up destroying the very people he seeks to protect.”
