Comic Book Review – The Scorched #26

The Scorched #26

Writers – John Layman

                (Todd McFarlane – Additional Script)

Artist – Stephen Segovia

She – Spawn, Redeemer, and Medieval Spawn look for Haunt to recruit him for a mission of utmost importance. A rival of Medieval Spawn’s has returned and he needs all the help he can get to take her down.  The meeting is cut short by a horde of shadow beasts in the form of wolves. These arcane creatures are summoned by Frank Bishop, a former soldier, who has returned from Hell. He is working with none other than the Violator’s sister, Viscerator!

I picked this issue up from Phantom of The Attic after seeing the cover of She-Spawn drawn by Carlo Barberi. It’s simple, yet striking. I am amazed at Spawn’s resurgence in popularity and that there are THREE spin-off titles featuring Spawn and his counterparts. Another surefire sign the 90s are making a comeback in the here and now!

Frank Bishop has ties to Al Simmons and Jessica Priest and the events of Operation: Chamuscado are revealed in a flashback that kicks off the issue. We don’t have an answer as to why Frank has returned to Earth and who or what brought him back to the land of the living. Also unconfirmed :  if he is a Hellspawn or not. Frank and Viscerator disappear just as She-Spawn realizes their presence inside the church Haunt’s human form was located. Spawn takes care of these unholy canines just in the nick of time. He needs the assembled anti-heroes for war, which leads into the milestone 350th issue of Spawn

This issue is full of all-out action from start to finish. You’ll learn about Frank’s origins and why he wants revenge on Jessica. I’m curious to see what he looks like in his evil, demonic form and if he is a Hellspawn or something much more dangerous. Speaking of demons, I really like the design of Viscerator. How can something look so beautiful, yet deadly at the same time? You get a lot of story for the low price of $2.99! Not bad! If you want to save money, Spawn and the other Spawn Universe titles are available on Hoopla. As of this writing (Sunday, February 25, 2024), this issue is available on the app if you’d like to use a borrow to check it out!

Spawn #350 was released on Wednesday, February 21, 2024. The fallout of the war between Heaven, Hell, and Greenworld and who survived it will be featured in The Scorched #27, which was released on Wednesday, March 13th, 2024

The solicitation for the next issue – “The aftermath of Spawn #350 is upon us. It’s six months later, and no one is safe!”
