Color Outside the Lines

Hello! Welcome to COTL, a discussion place for BIPOC. Posted the first 3 Wednesdays of the month

Thread Rules

  1. We ask that only those who identify as people of color participate in this discussion. White Avocados, while valued members of this community, should remain in ‘lurk’ mode.
  2. Shaming and hateful speech are unacceptable.
  3. Please keep potentially traumatic content safely behind spoiler tags.
  4. Nobody on this thread is more or less a person of color than anyone else. (We will not set clearly delineated boundaries on who qualifies as a ‘person of color.’ As a starting point, this thread uses the definition of ‘non-European heritage of sufficient prominence to affect one’s navigation of a society built on white normativity.’ However, we recognize that there are identities which skirt either side of the divide. If people feel that they meaningfully experience the identity of being a person of color, then they are welcome to participate.)

The month of fasting, worship & reflection has begun. Ramadan Mubarak to all those who celebrate & a happy Iftar!

The Oscars were on this Sunday & there were some good wins for BIPOC creators & performers: DaVine Joy Randolph (The Holdovers – Best Supporting Actress), Cord Jefferson (American Fiction – Best Adapted Screenplay) & Takashi Yamazaki (Godzilla: Minus One – Best Visual Effects). All of whom, gave excellent speeches (DaVine’s “being myself” & Cord’s “give smaller films a chance”).

However, lately something about Oppenheimer has been bugging me. The lack of acknowledgement of downwinders or the lack of focus on the actual victims of the bomb (outside a few lines). Not even a dream sequence scene of the devastating effects on the Japanese people the bomb was targeting!

Dune 2 also released recently & my opinions seem to be in the minority (in terms of engagement), as something about the franchise/story irks me: isn’t it supposed to be about a White Saviour? I thought the first film was well made, but the way people talk about the film/s… You’d think Paul Atreides was the best thing since sliced bread? I suppose it’s more about a testament to the direction of Denis Villeneuve? 🤷🏾‍♀️

I haven’t seen the new Dune sequel, so perhaps i’m just talking out of my arse? Perhaps someone here can talk on the nature of the white saviour aspect in the sequel? Which it almost feels like Oppenheimer fits into, as a general vibe? I dunno, the more I think about it, the less I like Oppenheimer?

Feel free to go off prompt!
