Star Wars: Mace Windu #1

I went to Eide’s Entertainment on Thursday, February 8th and there were slim pickings on the new comics rack. No copies of Batman #142 or Ultimate Black Panther #1 left to be had. I brought a small list of titles on a Post-It Note with me so I could look for the comics I wanted. One book that I didn’t have marked down was Mace Windu #1. I was on the fence about buying it since I usually wait for certain Star Wars related mini-series to be collected in trade. I figured what the hell and I added it to my buy pile.
Mace Windu is sent on a mission to Ro Mira to find a woman named Azita Cruuz. She is in possession of a new fuel called Coaxium Ultra and the formula how to refine it. She sent out a galaxy wide message that she would trade it all for credits and a safe way off world. Time is of the essence for Mace to locate and rescue Azita before the fuel and formula fall into the wrong hands.
Rolling the dice and taking a chance on this first issue paid off as it was full of action from start to finish. It was a quick read and very interesting. I really enjoyed the art from Georges Jeanty. There is a beautiful double page spread of Mace encountering a city at the heart of the ice moon. The look in Mace’s eyes tells you all need to know about the wonders he has come across.
When I showed my friend Adam the books I purchased, I told him I’m a big fan of the Star Wars comics from Marvel. The only thing that bums me out is their new price point – not too long ago, the cost of the titles under the Star Wars banner increased from $3.99 to $4.99. I’m not exactly sure why this happened but this is surely one of the reasons I wait for the trade. If I wait long enough, the local library system will have them and I can borrow them for up to 3 weeks.
I will likely stick with this mini-series to see which pirates, smugglers, and villains go after Mace and Azita and what it will take to complete this mission successfully. Fingers crossed we get a cameo from Jango Fett! This would be a nice call back to the showdown between Mace and Jango in Star Wars – Episode II: Attack of the Clones.
