Hi there! If you’re joining us now, the month of march is gonna be all about platforming games – 2D, 3D, maybe even 2.5D.
Oh look, it’s the VOLCANO stage! Todays prompt is about the theming used for the various lands and levels you must conquer across platforming games. Sometimes the theme is little more than a backdrop, other times it’s more holistically integrated in what obstacles you will face. With the amount of platformers theres been produced some repeat theming is inevitable, and theres no shortage of Ice, Fire, or even Food or Music levels to go around.
So for today, what’s the most creative theming you’ve seen in a platform game? Is there a theme you just don’t get tired of no matter what? What are the best iterations of classic themes like fire, sewer, mountain etc?
Bonus: Is there a theme you’re just tired of at this point?
Extra Bonus: What game managed to put a fresh spin on a worn-out theme?
Extra Bonus Deluxe: A game that squandered an otherwise cool theme
TOMORROW: Spiritual successors / homages (Your Yooka Laylees and Axiom Verges etc)
