The Best Cover Song in Music Tournament: Nominations!

*This is a nominating thread: Upvote to your hearts’ content now, but there will be a separate seeding thread to follow before the rounds, so that each song gets a fair shake at making it into the tournament… I anticipate a lot of entries here.

Here you may nominate any cover song. Qualifications for what counts as a cover song:

  • Original song must have been recorded (not just written) by an artist/group, before being recorded by a different artist.
  • Original song need not have been released: The original “Girls Just Wanna Have Fun” by Robert Hazard was only recorded as a demo. Nevertheless, Cyndi Lauper’s version is fair game.
  • Covers may be from albums or live shows. Bruno Mars’s cover of the Zutons’ “Valerie” at the MTV Awards show is fair game, as is the Mark Ronson/Amy Winehouse version. Or Amy’s version by herself. On that note…
  • Multiple covers of the same song are eligible.
  • “Cover” must be by new artists. I love George Michael singing “Somebody to Love,” but he was surrounded by (I think) all the members of Queen sans Freddie, so it was really Queen performing the song with a new vocalist. The line does get blurry with covers like Run-D.M.C.’s “Walk This Way,” which I’ll allow even though Steven Tyler and Joe Perry show up on it. Others on a case-by-case basis.
  • No parodies, sorry. Hopefully Pachylad is planning a Weird Al Tournament at some point.
  • Foreign language covers welcome, nay encouraged!

Links to videos appreciated but not required. If you can include the name of the original artists, I anticipate it’ll help avoid questions/discussions about eligibility (of which I am arbiter. This is not a cheer-ocracy). Also I’d love to include original versions for curiosity’s sakes for the songs that make the cut.

(BTW, I’ve got over 30 covers on my list that I won’t post here so as to give others the pleasure of doing so, but any that y’all don’t will still make it through to the seeding round automatically)
