Justice League vs Godzilla Vs Kong #4
Writer – Brian Buccellato
Artists – Christian Duce and Tom Derenick
This issue was pre-ordered online at Impulse Creations Comics and Collectibles. It got held up in the mail due to the wintry weather we had in Mid-January. I didn’t get to read this as soon as I would’ve liked to but that’s okay.
This is the breather issue. After the non-stop action in the previous three issues, we get the calm before the storm and the final three issues. Batman and the Justice League are licking their wounds and taking time to come to grips with what happened to Superman and the other heroes that were hurt in battle. Hal Jordan helps get Atom Smasher medical attention as Shazam follows the trail of Godzilla. What seems like the entire villain community has assembled to help execute Luthor’s plan. He is using a beacon to draw the monsters together. One of them is an undersea creature that is trying to attack Atlantis. The Justice League scramble to stop the onslaught as Godzilla faces off with this new threat. Aquaman has an ace in the hole and releases it to protect his home and people. I think you can draw your own conclusion on what it is. Wink, wink.
Toyman has drawn the ire of the League and Lois as it’s revealed he had a hand in unleashing Godzilla on Metropolis and what happened to the Man of Steel. We also learn that Godzilla is the only kaiju that can’t be controlled by Luthor’s beacon. The Dreamstone is the key to ending all of this. Which side will get to Toyman and the gem first?
I was keeping track of Kong Watch and when he would rear his hairy head. Now I’m keeping an eye out for the eventual showdown between Godzilla vs Kong. I’m thinking the setup takes place on the final few pages of Issue 6 with the battle taking place in Issue 7. That might be too late for this to happen and the battle would end up being short and sweet. Of course – it would be a preview of things to come. My gut tells me that when the monsters do get sent home, it could set up a future one-shot of Godzilla vs Kong as a tie-in with the movie being released in March.
When I was looking for the solicitation information for the next issue, the cover art shows the appearance of Green Lantern John Stewart. The assembled heroes is a nice throwback to the Justice League cartoon series. How and why, John Stewart joins the fray will be revealed and I’m curious to see if any other heavy hitters answer the call for help. I’m sure Shazam will have a big part to play in the finale as he feels a pang of guilt for what happened to Superman. I really hope we get a satisfying conclusion to this mini-series because each ensuing issue has me more and more excited for what’s to come.
Justice League vs Godzilla vs Kong #5 will be released on Tuesday February 20th, 2024. If you need to kill some time between now and then, I HIGHLY recommend going to see Godzilla Minus One if you are able to do so. If you have seen it already, tell us what you think about the film in the comments section.
