2023 Avocado Snubby Awards: The Voting

Thank you to every who participate in nominations for the 2023 Avocado Snubby Award, honoring the best filmwork not nominated at this year’s Oscars. I’m happy to present our honorable Snubby Nominees.

Notes

  • Nominees were selected based on the Top 5 upvoted films in each category (10 in Best Picture). More than 5 films were allowed in the case of ties I didn’t want to break. We have less than five nominees in categories where less than five films reached the minimum – I set a low minimun this year of just one additional person upvoting a submission for it to be eligible to be nominated.
  • Now for the part where I become the no fun police: Disqualifications. A straight forward disqualification was the submission of Barbie for Best Original Screenplay. I understand some people disagree with how it was categorized, but since it was nominated for Adapted Screenplay at the Oscars, I did not think it should take a Screenplay spot in our Snubby categories.
  • I have a more debatable ruling in the Documentary Category. I don’t completely object to submitting YouTube videos for this category, as you can consider it just a different release method like theatrical vs streaming. But in my opinion, while hbomberguy’s video on plagiarism was excellent, I do not think he intends for it to be considered a Documentary Film and it would be against the spirit of the category as a nominee. Apologies for this disqualification. On the other hand, Lemino’s Kennedy Assassination video does in my mind seem intended to fit in the Documentary genre, so I’ve accepted it as a nominee. A last note on the subject is I absolutely agree Double Fine’s Psych Oddyssey series deserves its due as a huge documentary achievement – but at +30 episodes cannot consider it eligible as a film.
  • A more fun note: The most nominated films! Topping the list this year are Asteroid City (12), Saltburn (8), Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse (7), The Boy and the Heron & May December (6), Barbie and Godzilla Minus One (5)

Below in the comments will be the nominees in each category. Please do not add more films, simply vote for your preference among these nominees. I encourage plenty of discussion and advocating for your favorites. I will allow at least two weeks of voting before announcing winners.
