The 1/30 Day Thread Salutes Senn High Alum Herblock

I graduated from Senn High School in 1980. Located on Chicago’s North Side, Senn is a fairly typical inner-city public high school, except for the fact that a lot of famous and semi-famous people graduated from there. Today let’s meet one that knew where to draw the line: political cartoonist Herblock, class of 1927.

Born Herbert Lawrence Block, Herb started signing his artwork Herblock while he attended Senn. He went on to attend Lake forest College for a couple of years, but left after he got a job doing editorial cartoons for the Chicago Daily news. This launched a career that eventually led to Herbie winning three individual Pulitzer prizes plus a shared one, the Presidential Medal of freedom and many other awards.

Herb passed away on October 7, 2001, at the age of 91. Here are a couple of his cartoons inspired by his time at Senn:
