This year we celebrate the 40th anniversary of Flashdance. Jennifer Beals plays the iconic role of Alex Owens, a welder by day and a stripper by night. It is one of the most iconic movies of the 80’s. It remains so well known that its dance routine is being parodied in commercials to this very day.
The film, though, was not well received by critics when it came out. Check out its Rotten Tomatoes score:

The movie is actually on Roger Ebert’s list of “Most Hated Films“, for which he awarded the film one-and-a-half stars. “The result is great sound and flashdance, signifying nothing,” he writes.
But maybe that was the whole point, as the thing that keeps Flashdance alive is that iconic soundtrack by legendary musician Giorgio Moroeder (who won the Academy Award for best original song with “Flashdance… What A Feeling”).
Also… a welder by day and a stripper by night! How can you hate that?
