Hey, Kevzero here, I’m an amateur photographer based on Cape Cod, Massachusetts. I mostly take wildlife photos, but have been recently taking pictures of many other things. This week: Gravestone Symbols. It’s October and I’ve been taking lots of pictures of cemeteries. From the mid-1600’s to the early 1800’s gravestones across New England were adorned with striking iconography. Common symbols among the stones are skulls and death’s head imagery representing mortality and the fleeting nature of life, to cherubic images symbolizing ascension, and portrait stone carvings that somewhat realistically resemble people; though not the deceased themselves.
