Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!
This thread has slowly become more of a monthly thing then a weekly thing, sorry about that! If I find inspiration to post more frequently I will, but for now this seems okay. As always, if you have ideas for prompts or just want to write something for the thread one week, just let me know. I’m more than happy to share this space with you all!
Anyway, for this week, let’s talk about surprises. I’m sure I’ve talked about this before, but I wasn’t always a fan of musicals. They took me by surprise. And for a while, even after finding some musicals that I enjoyed, I was often skeptical about new musicals. But musicals can surprise you. Which is what I want to talk about this week! Have you ever been surprised that liked a musical? For example, I’ve written before about being very surprised that Little Women was so good. I’m not wild about adaptations, and I just never really gave much thought to the book or story in general. On the surface, it just didn’t look that interesting to me and didn’t seem to make sense as a musical. Luckily, I had a good friend that showed me the error of my ways and introduced me to this lovely musical (and Sutton Foster). Because I’ve talked about Little Women before, I won’t go into too much detail today. Instead, here’s one of my favorite songs from the show. It’s just so full of joy and enthusiasm. Plus, it’s a story within a story! My friends and I love this song so much we made a video in college where we reenacted it. No, I’m not sharing that. 🙂 Just know that it’s very, very good and cool.
What about you? Have you ever been surprised by a musical? Of course, feel free to talk about whatever you want if you don’t feel inspired by the prompt!
