Public Domain Theater: Meet John Doe (& “Aschenputtel”)

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

The Christmas season is upon us, so this month on Public Domain Theater, we have Frank Capra’s other Christmas film featuring villainous oligarchs, pleas on behalf of the common man, and a guy threatening to jump to his death (very weird pattern you’ve got there, Mr. Capra). Starring Gary Cooper and Barbara Stanwyck, it’s Meet John Doe!

We also have for you the 1922 German cartoon “Aschenputtel”, an adaptation of the fairy tale “Cinderella”. Directed by the acclaimed Lotte Reiniger, it uses silhouette animation to recreate the appearance of a shadow play, and is utterly unlike almost any cartoon you’re likely to see.

So why not take a sip of the eggnog, bite off a chunk of roast beast, and enjoy some happy holiday viewing.
