Musicals Thread (Decade’s Best)

Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!

Did you know that we’re about to be at the end of a decade? And that people are making all these wonderful lists of their favorite pop culture things from the past ten years? Well, they are, and now so are we! This week I invite you all to post your favorite musicals (or plays!) of the decade. There are no rules, so post any kind of list you want. Want to make a list of your favorite shows that you actually saw? Great! Your favorite soundtracks? Plays? Revivals? Off-Broadway? Broadway? All good! Let’s all celebrate a great decade of theatre! And probably get some awesome recommendations along the way.

I’m going to post my full list in the comments section because I don’t want this to be entirely about me. But it should come as no surprise to any of you that my absolute favorite musical of the decade is Natasha, Pierre, and the Great Comet of 1812. If you’ve been to this thread before it’s very likely that you’ve seen me sing its praises several times (in fact, you can read my lengthy and emotional thoughts here and here), but I just can’t pass up another opportunity to remind everyone that I believe this show is special and magical and perfect. Just watching the Tony performance again while making this post has me tearing up because there’s just so much joy and love on that stage. It’s really a beautiful thing to me. To quote Man in Chair from The Drowsy Chaperone:

Oh, I love it so much! . . . it does what a musical is supposed to do: it takes you to another world. And it-it gives you a little tune to carry with you in your head for-for when you’re feeling blue. You know?

Ok, enough about me, I want to know your favorite musicals (or plays!) of the decade!
