Comic Book Review – The Green Lantern Vol. 1 – Intergalactic Lawman

After two months sucked into the world of the book of the month club, I decided to cleanse my palate with The Green Lantern Volume 1 Intergalactic Lawman by Grant Morrison and Liam Sharp.

I was hesitant to pick this series up from the start because some of Grant Morrison’s stories are confusing to the point I have to re-read them just to get a better idea of his narrative and far-out ideas. I decided to give it a try and I was not disappointed.

Much like All- Star Superman, the first six issues are pretty much self-contained but touch upon the overall plot in some form or another.

Hal Jordan has taken a hiatus from the Green Lantern Corps but is called back to duty after a fellow Green Lantern crash lands on Earth, near death. After Hal Jordan rounds up escaped prisoners that were being transported to the Sciencells, he heads to New Oa. There an unnamed Guardian tells Hal about the new menace terrorizing the galaxy: Commander Mu and his Blackstars. The Guardian also tells Hal that there is a traitor amongst the Corps. Can Hal discover the traitor while also trying to stop the impending threat of Mu and his plan to construct his ultimate weapon?

I love Liam Sharp’s art because it has a very Neal Adamsesque quality to it. I also like the outrageous physiques he gives some of the characters and the alien creatures he brings to life.

The stories in this volume have a 1950s sci-fi feel to them with just a touch of 1970s zaniness for good measure. It’s nice to see Hal protecting other planets located in Sector 2814, one of which is the planet Rann (wink, wink). Morrison does a great job of not only paying homage to Hal Jordan’s past as a Green Lantern but paving the way for the future with new villains and threats looming the universe at large.

There is a reason this series is called The Green Lantern because Hal Jordan is not only the star of the book but because he is the greatest Green Lantern of all time. You will find out why by picking up the first volume of this series and giving it a read. You have time to discover one of the best books of 2019 just before The Green Lantern Volume 2 is released on December 24th, 2019.
