As a child of the 1980s, one of the cornerstones of my youth was Masters of the Universe. I was thrilled when I found a copy of He-Man and the Masters of the Multiverse #1 at my local comic shop last week.

As a fan of alternate histories and the multiverse in general, this comic hit the sweet spot for me.

On Eternia, Skeletor has Prince Adam trapped in Castle Greyskull. Skeletor’s ultimatum: the destruction of the city of Eternos and the death of King Radnor and Adam’s family or the secrets and magic power contained within the castle. Prince Adam defies the Sorceress and transforms into He-Man. As He-Man confronts Skeletor, he finds the villain dead, impaled on his own staff. He-Man comes face to face with his evil doppelganger. As the two face off, the evil He-Man kills He-Man and claims his Power Sword.

On a different Eternia, Prince Keldor is with his mentor Red Beast and Lyn when he is summoned by King Radnor. Captain Teela of Hellskull has been captured. Prince Keldor defies King Radnor’s orders and has Teela released. Keldor tells the King that releasing Teela will prevent the evil He-Man from attacking Eternos to rescue his compatriot. It’s revealed that a previous assault let by the evil He-Man resulted in the death of Keldor’s brother and mother, the Queen.

Writer Tim Seeley and artist Dan Fraga are the guides on this journey through the multiple versions of Eternia. If you are a fan of the 1987 Masters of the Universe movie, you are in for a treat and a few surprises. There are two alternate versions of He-Man that recruit Prince Keldor to save the multiverse from Anti-He-Man that you have to see to believe. This duo tells Prince Keldor Anti-He-Man’s machinations and quest for ultimate power. Will Keldor help or not?
