Best Video Game Song Tournament, 1983-1989: Top 32 (Part 1 of 2)

Now it’s time for the top 32. With one full round of eliminations behind us things are really heating up. Now that the number of songs is nice and manageable we will no longer be feathering rounds; this round will end Tuesday at 10PM Pacific and the second half begins Wednesday.

You can listen to the entire top 32 here. See the bracket here.

PLEASE LISTEN TO BOTH SONGS IN A MATCH BEFORE VOTING

Voting will be live until Tuesday, November 5th at 10:00 PM Pacific

Fun facts about the top 32:

  • Top 32 by source game:
    • 5 Songs: Mega Man 2
    • 3 Songs: Metroid
    • 2 Songs: Akumajou Densetsu, Final Fantasy, The Legend of Zelda, Castlevania
    • 1 Song: Blaster Master (NES), Bubble Bobble, Castlevania II: Simon’s Quest, Contra, Ducktales, Maniac Mansion (1987), Mega Man, Mother, Ninja Gaiden (NES), OutRun, Space Harrier, Super Mario Bros, Super Mario Bros 2/Doki Doki Panic, Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles, Tetris, Ys I & II (Turbografx CD)
  • Mega Man 2 remains our most popular game, though its representation as a percentage of the field dropped slightly between rounds. It still makes up ~15% of all remaining songs.
  • Super Mario Bros 3 was the second most popular game coming out of group play, with 4 songs in the top 64. All 4 lost in a stunning upset. The Mario series in general went from 9 songs in the top 64 to just 2 in the top 32. Everyone salty over Nintendo’s performance in the best game tournaments, this is for you!
  • Metroid and The Legend of Zelda are the only games with multiple songs to go undefeated in the top 64. So maybe Nintendo will do well yet.
  • To the best of my knowledge, Maniac Mansion (represented here by the Commodore 64 version) is the only PC game remaining.
