On October 30th 1961 the Soviet Union performed nuclear test AN602 detonating the RDS-220 Hydrogen Bomb at Sukhoy Nos, Severny Island. The Soviets ran the test under the code names “Vanya” and “Ivan”, but it is best known by its western nickname: the Tsar Bomba. With a blast yield of 50 Megatons of TNT, it remains the most powerful man made explosion. The mushroom cloud from the detonation was around 67 km high, seven times the height of Mt. Everest, well above the stratosphere. Shockwaves from the blast broke windows as far away as Norway.
