AvocaD&D and Tabletop Gaming Thread: Murder in Skyway, Week 8

Welcome back to the weekly D&D and Tabletop Gaming thread!  Here’s a place where we can talk about Dungeons & Dragons or any other tabletop games that you nerds might be into.  Tell us about the games you’re playing, speculate about future expansions, recruit your fellow Avocados into new groups, whatever you want.

We lost two players from our game this week, as both Spiny Creature and Sister Jude the Obscure had real life get in the way again.  If anyone else is interested in jumping in, let us know in the comments.  We meet Saturday nights starting at 9pm EST, and sessions generally last between 3 and 4 hours.  You’ll need to have an account on both Roll20 and Discord.  Remember to tag our current DM, Josephus Brown, in your comment (@JosesphusBrown:disqus), since he’ll be the one coordinate with regarding characters and such.
The AvocaD&D group is currently running through a set of Eberron adventures, DM’d by Josephus Brown. The player characters (all at Level 4) are as follows:

 • TheCleverGuy as Cybin Stoneswift, a Hill Dwarf Wizard who’s singularly obsessed with the study of various forms of mushrooms
 • Otto (our only non-Avocado party member) as Magz, a Changeling Rogue, a native of Sharn familiar with the city’s seedy underbelly
 • The Hayes Code as Cassidy Cody, a Tiefling Bard who makes a living busking in the lightning rail stations with the talent passed down to her from her Pa’s deal with the devil
 • Wafflicious as Pizzazzle, a Dragonborn Druid who just wants to clean up the planet so it’s fit for consumption by the all-powerful Nexu
 • The Wasp Woman as NRS-K80, a Warforged Cleric who discovered a passion for healing after serving as a living weapon in the Last War

We’d messed up big time.  The halfling, Fridden, whom we were supposed to be interrogating was running down the road, screaming about a snake that only he could see.  All the guards in this dwarf stronghold were on alert and heading out the front door to see what was going on, and most of our little group of Interlopers was still in the alley.

So, we decided it was safest to let Fribbit go,  especially since he was heading straight towards a group of city watchmen.  Luckily, the Boromar guards from inside thought it was in their best interest to chase down the halfling as opposed to look for us, so we had a chance to get back inside and make a quick search of his room.  Pizzazzle was still in owl form, and Cassidy was also airborne thanks to her magic cittern, so they flew back in the window easily.  K80 and Magz both climbed up the alley wall, but I thought I’d be better off going in the front door.  I made myself invisible, and once the guards stopped coming I snuck inside and made my way upstairs.

On my way up, I passed by a perturbed-looking gnome coming down, clutching a handful of papers.  I watched as he turned into a female dwarf, swore to him- or herself, and then turned invisible.  I thought that might have been Magz, but found I was wrong when I went upstairs to find Magz and the rest of them in Freddy’s room already.  K80 had gone back in through the window and found a  female dwarf rifling through a box.  The dwarf had bugged out quickly, and when K80 followed, she found only a confused-looking gnome in the hallway.

When I told them what I’d seen, we put two and two together and figured that we had a changeling spy working the same case as us.  Cass and the others looked in the box that the spy had been in and found Friday’s journal along with a couple of health potions.  We had just enough time to give the room next door a once-over.  It looked like someone had left in a hurry, and we found some more incriminating correspondence from Fidget, lots of clothes in various sizes and styles, and a hidden note saying to “bring evidence to the lightning rail station and take the midnight train to Thrane.”  So, now we knew where that changeling was headed.

By this time, the Boromars were on their way back, so we snuck out the window and back over the roof of the tavern next door.  We found K80’s Meat Wagon and made our way over to the railway.  There was a large crowd, but I luckily, the changeling hadn’t had time to change clothes, and I had gotten a pretty good look on the stairs.  We spotted them in the crowd, but didn’t want to cause another big scene in public.  We kept eyes on them until they boarded the train, and got on after.  I was able to follow them to a private compartment–they went in a gnomish man and came out a human woman.  But I wasn’t fooled.  Pizzazzle turned into a spider to creep under the compartment door.  She let K80 in, and the two of them waited inside the compartment.  This was mostly to keep K80 hidden, since the changeling would definitely have recognized our Warforged friend.  Meanwhile, Cassidy and I kept tabs on our spy.  When they went back to their compartment, we had them cornered.

zilThe changeling said her name was Zil, and when she realized we were also working to uncover whatever plot Fridgin had known about, she was happy to compare notes with us.  Zil worked for another branch of the Boromar clan–apparently the Boromars who have been working with the Canniths against the other Canniths aren’t actually sanctioned by the majority of their own clan.  I’m still not entirely clear on what the Canniths and Boromars are doing, but I trust its something bad.  Zilch offered us some useful items as a reward for sharing our info with her, once we got to the next station.   But as we got off the train, we were attack by a group of hired goons.

There 4 of the ruffians the station, and another 2 archers stationed on a roof looking over the platform.  Cassidy got hit a thrown dagger from one of the ruffians, and the others rushed up to attack me and Zil.  I used a special mixture of spores I designed for self-defense, making it appear I was in a few different places at once, and backed away, while Cassidy put one of the archers to sleep. He didn’t stay asleep long though–the fall from the roof must have jarred him awake. I was glad my mirror images were there, because one of the brigands nearly took my head off as I tried to get out of reach–luckily he aimed for the wrong me!  Pizzazzle enchanted her quarterstaff and gave one of the goons a good whack, and our new friend let loose a Thunderwave, knocking another goon off the platform–he didn’t get back up.  K80 summoned up a floating rod with a snake wrapped around it and bashed the archer that had fallen from the roof.  Cassidy used Hideous Laughter to make the second archer fall off the roof as well, and I hit one of the remaining goons with a Ray of Sickness.  One of the archers got to his feet and shot an arrow at Pizzazzle, who charged and knocked him out with her enchanted staff.  Zil cast  Shatter, which was enough to make another goon explode, and K80’s spiritual weapon crushed the other archer.  We finished off the last of the ruffians as they tried to flee.

With the fight over, Zil lead us to a storage locker and gave us a wand of magic detection, candle that would let us see invisible creatures for an hour or so, and an ever-smoking bottle.  We parted ways with spy on good terms, and headed back to Sharn to report back to the man who’d sent us on this job, Tybalt, or Trynot, or something like that…1
