The Weekly Music Thread Goes Live!

Let’s discuss any and all music here. You’ve got a new artist who’s rocking your boat that you want to talk about? Post a video! Found out about that unearthed Coltrane album that has the jazz freak in you losing your mind? Lay it out for us! Do you have a theory about what your favorite band might do for their next album? Let’s hear it! Anything and everything music-related goes here.

This week’s discussion prompt: What are your favorite live albums? The general consensus seems to be that the majority of live albums are inessential. But there are some live albums out there that are genuinely good, and even a few which contain performances of songs that are arguably superior to the studio versions. Which live albums would you wholeheartedly recommend? And by all means, feel free to suggest bootlegs as well!

My all-time favorite live album is probably The Living End by Hüsker Dü. Songs from numerous concerts on their final tour edited together seamlessly to create the greatest show ever, jam-packed with ferocious performances that are far superior to the album versions. Essential for any Hüsker Dü fan, and well worth a listen for casual fans as well. For anyone who hasn’t heard the album before, just check out the opening one-two punch of “New Day Rising” and “Girl Who Lives on Heaven Hill”:

Blows the album versions away, in my humble opinion. And again, edited together seamlessly from recordings of two separate shows in two different countries.

As always, any and all music-related topics are welcome. Have fun, and rock out with yr guac out!
