Welcome to the Book Nook! This is the weekly thread for Avocados to discuss books we’re currently reading, recommendations, genre, and serious literary criticism.
This week’s recommended discussion: how the structure of a novel or series informs your interpretation of a character, or how their growth is shown. This one was inspired by a discussion of The Dark Tower books, and how the TV adaptation is starting with Wizard and Glass. I maintain his youth and first mission are a terrible place to launch Roland’s character, and he’s better served by the structure of the book series. What other characters have structure as a major factor in how you perceive them?
Settle into your favorite chair, and let’s celebrate the written word.
One caveat: because we’re here to use our words, this is a NO GIF/YouTube/social media embed zone. The OTs are full of clutter, and I want to keep that out of this thread. Pictures of books related to a post are fine, though.
upcoming topics:
9/18: bad reading habits (h/t to the good king snugglewumps)
9/25: changing seasons
10/2: popular books you don’t like (h/t to I Hate Water)
10/9: book paraphernalia
Book Nook posts every Wednesday at 8:15 AM Eastern.
