July 30 is the birthday of the phenomenal Laurence Fishburne.
Some of you may remember seeing the Emmy and Tony winning actor (and Academy Award nominee for What’s Love Got to Do With It) rocking the shades as early as 1979, when he appeared as Tyrone “Mr. Clean” Miller in Apocalypse Now. He lied about his age, and was 14 years old in 1976 when production started. He’d be 17 by the production was over.
Fishburne has also had appearances as Dr’ Langston in the CSI television universe, Perry White in the DC Extended Universe, Bill Foster in the Marvel Cinematic Universe, and Pops Johnson in the Black-ish extended universe. This means, by the way, that Fishburne is in the company of actors —- alongside the likes of Josh Brolin and Chris Evans —— who have played multiple comic book roles. Not only was he Perry White and Goliath… he’s also the voice of the Silver Surfer.
Fishburne is also the latest actor to play Jack Crawford in the Hannibal extended universe, testing his mettle in mind games with cannibalistic serial killers.
His most enduring role, though, is that of a mysterious man who sits in a baller chair, knows how to fight, possesses secret knowledge, and hangs out with a skinny white dude who can best be described as the savior of humanity.
That’s right: Cowboy Curtis.
