Musicals Thread (Sharing)

Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!

Have you ever tried to share your love of musicals with a friend? Have you ever created a new musical fan? Here at the Avocado we share all kinds of pop culture interests with one another. We love to talk about our favorite things. That’s one of the reasons I love this place: sharing is fun! But when it comes to sharing musicals with someone who isn’t already a fan…things get tricky. It’s fairly easy to put on a new album you like and share it with a friend on a road trip, but what if you want to share your new favorite musical? As someone who tries to do this with my husband, I can tell you from experience that it isn’t easy. He’s enjoyed some of the things we’ve listened to, but I know that it isn’t the same as actually seeing the show (and that’s fair). But I still really want to share the things I love. So, this week, let’s talk about sharing. Whether you’ve tried or not, is there a particular show that you think might be a good introduction to musicals? Is there a particular cast recording that might be best suited for this task?

This is on my mind right now because I’m visiting my best friends who live a few states away. And we love to share. We send yearly lists of our favorite new albums with explanations for why they’re our favorite, we have themed TV nights where we show and discuss our favorite episodes, and sometimes we write and share detailed emails explaining why we love some pop culture thing. For example, one friend wrote all about wrestling. I wrote all about musicals. Those emails were actually the original inspiration for this thread. I realized that if I was going to explain why I love musicals I was going to need to break them into categories (romance, historical, comedies, etc.) and many of the prompts for these threads came from those emails. The question is, did any of them become fans of musicals? Well, not entirely. But there was one musical that stood out among the others as the one everyone liked the most: Avenue Q. So, my answer would be Avenue Q. If you’re looking to get someone into musicals, that might be a good place to start. And even if they don’t become huge fans, if your friends are cool enough, they’ll read all of your emails, listen to all of the clips you send, happily receive your live updates on the Tony Awards, and share their thoughts. Which is great. Because sharing is fun.
