Back into the flow, and trying to fit my creative work in with other pursuits, like getting back into shape and gearing up to seriously seek better employment. I’ve been going on several-mile bike rides not-quite-daily and taking long walks on my days off, among these stopping by some of the parks and natural areas I used to visit frequently several years ago. I did a lot of wildlife and nature photography back in the day, and I’m long overdue at using my old haunts as a new source of visual inspiration.

The confluence of Fleming Creek and the Huron River between Ann Arbor and Ypsilanti, Michigan, sometime in the early years of this decade.
I also took another trip to the Detroit Institute of Arts Friday, catching the tail end of the Ruben and Isabel Toledo exhibit and the start of a collaboration on Impressionism between the DIA and the Albright-Knox Museum in Buffalo. I also did a few copy sketches, continuing a run through the Baroque that I’d started the previous day at the University of Michigan Museum of Art in Ann Arbor (in between catching the USA-France Women’s World Cup quarterfinal and having a delicious taco salad in Midtown).

Copy sketch of Rubens’ Briseis Given Back to Achilles (c. 1630-31), a small painting that was possibly in preparation for a large mural or even tapestry.
It’s really hot right now, and hard to do much in my place except hydrate, but I’m already planning strategies on how to get around it. Looking forward to doing more oil painting and gouache soon, as well as getting a better handle on how I approach all this.
The header’s a second of reflection in the Huron River at Island Park in north Ann Arbor, taken at my friend’s birthday party in 2010. I always thought that would make a decent basis for a painting long before I got around to doing this stuff myself.
