Public Domain Theater: House on Haunted Hill (& “The Plumber”)

Welcome to Public Domain Theater, your home for the wonderful world of films that have (in the United States, at least) fallen into the public domain, and are free for everyone to see!

After a three week break, we’re finally ready to bring you another feature film! Director William Castle may be best remembered for the outlandish gimmicks he used to promote his movies, but he could also produce some genuine gems. See this week’s presentation: House on Haunted Hill, a superb blend of old-school scares and tongue-in-cheek humor, starring the undisputed master of both those arts, Mr. Vincent Price.

We’ll be presenting you with two versions of the film here. The first has HD picture quality, but unfortunately crops the image to give it a 16:9 aspect ratio. The second version maintains the aspect ratio of the original film, but at much poorer picture quality. Which you prefer is up to you.

But before we get to that, we’ve also got an opening cartoon for you, and this one’s a treat! In the past we’ve had some big name cartoon characters on Public Domain Theater: Superman, Bugs Bunny, Daffy Duck, Popeye the Sailor. But this week we have for you the biggest star of them all. The unbeatable, the incomparable . . . Oswald the Lucky Rabbit! (a.k.a. Walt Disney’s rough draft for Mickey Mouse) See him here in that cinematic masterpiece, “The Plumber”!
