Box Office: June 21-23

With Disney’s estimates originally at $140 million and others in the $125 million range, Toy Story 4 took the top spot at the box office but managed just a $118 million debut – though we expect some upward revisions with finalized numbers. The film is getting solid reviews, “A” CinemaScores, but it’s also getting some disinterest from a number of those that felt the third film was a “good enough” ending that there isn’t a compelling need to see a fourth installment, which is the camp I find myself in. The film did another $120 million overseas to bring its worldwide total to $238 million for its opening.

The counter-programming of Child’s Play this weekend was looking at projections of about $16 million but that’s come up a bit short at just a hair over $14 million. It’s landed a “C+” CinemaScore so it has a tough road ahead but is at least working off a $10 million budget.

Anna saw release this weekend and debuted in eleventh place making $3.5 million on an unknown budget.

We’re running a little light this weekend (a non-rainy weekend here, the first in ages) so let’s look at what’s to come. Wednesday sees the launch of Annabelle Comes Home in 3,500 screens from Warner Bros./New Line while Friday sees Universal bringing out Yesterday in 2,600 screens. In limited release, IFC brings Ophelia out in 50 screens while other new debuts include The Last Whistle from Vertical Entertainment, Maiden from Sony Classics, Three Peaks from Greenwich and The Other Side of Heaven 2: Fire of Faith from ArtAffects.
