Game of Thrones Character Tournament – Final Four

Results Round-Up

  • Despite the inherent intrigue of a Stark Sister Battle, Arya vs Sansa was the most lopsided match-up of the last round, Arya winning by a 66-34 margin
  • Tyrion’s 60-43 win over Brienne was technically an upset based on seeding (5 over 4), with Brienne having looked like one of the strongest contenders in the tournament until she ran into Tyrion.
  • The war between Olenna Tyrell and Sandor Clegane proved an exciting one – Sandor took an early lead, which Olenna proceeded to gradually chip away – eventually winning by a single vote. (49-48). I do mourn for the Hound a bit, thought he had a very respectable run. While he had his moments through the first three seasons, I think of Season 4 as when he really broke out into a fan favorite (with ‘I’m gonna have to eat every fucking chicken in this room!”). What I find really impressive about Arya and the Hound’s storyline that season was- really, it’s a season of “filler.” Later seasons would have none of their meandering the Riverlands and the Vale – just the big fight where the Hound gets injured (which is really all the Storm of Swords material that storyline had left). But it didn’t matter that the Hound and Arya don’t really do anything between that season premiere and finale. It was fun just watching those characters just hang out and form a relationship.  And some of that episodic stuff – like his robbing of the farmer and his daughter – actually got a great pay off later.

The spirit of a tournament like this is the criteria for how you judge these characters is whatever you want it to be as determine who the “best” characters according to the Avocado are. Though since this is a TV show tournament, I would suggest looking at characters more through the lense of their TV versions.
