Ma Beagle Night thread

Happy Mother’s Day Night, everyone.

Originally, this thread was going to be a salute to the original MILF–Mommy from The Family Circus–but that would’ve quickly turned into a depressing discussion, as Mommy has slowly been consumed by despair over the years as she realizes her four one-panel-joke children are never going to age.

So instead, we’ll talk about an iconic mother in her own right, Ma Beagle. If you’re not familiar with DuckTales, Ma Beagle is the mother to a seemingly infinite number of Beagle Boys (she must get around) of varying degrees of intelligence. Ma is very proud of her family’s criminal heritage, as all of her sons (she never seemed to have any daughters for some reason) are crooks, and she wouldn’t have it any other way.

Ma Beagle may be an overly stern bank robber parent in some ways, but she does love her boys, sending her famous saw-cakes to her sons whenever they end up in prison (which is frequently). Ma also wants nothing more than to get her hands on Scrooge McDuck’s fortune, which she’s actually succeeded at a few times, until her boys somehow screw it up. What’s a member of “Better Cellblocks & Gardens” to do?

On the original DuckTales, Ma Beagle was delightfully voiced by June Foray (who also lent her pipes Magica DeSpell on the show as well), giving the character a good amount of warmth despite her status as one of the most wanted criminals in all of Duckburg. Of course, as wonderful as Ma Beagle was, you could have too much of a good thing, as for better or for worse she was given a number of “her own episodes” during the show’s final season, including the infamous “Beaglemania” (which had her being a ridiculously overbearing band manager to her sons when they suddenly became a rock sensation, and yes, that was just as dumb as it sounds). But she was also responsible for some of the funniest episodes of the series as well, and I’ll always have a soft spot for the character.

Ma Beagle has also shown up a couple of times on the DuckTales reboot, but so far she hasn’t made quite the same impact on that series, as the main joke for the updated version of the character is that she’s always lamenting over how disappointing her children are. She’s still good for a laugh, of course, but ultimately no match for June Foray’s take on the bank robber momma as far as I’m concerned (I should seriously get back to doing those DuckTales reviews, shouldn’t I?).

Have a good night, Avocados!
