2019 Summer TV Preview – Network Shows (I Refuse To Talk About The Mini-Golf Reality Show)

There are so many new and terrible sounding reality shows premiering this summer. There’s one where they just spin a wheel. It’s called Spin The Wheel. So here, enjoy information about the few scripted shows (and one or two non-terrible sounding reality shows)

CBS

Blood & Treasure

Blood & Treasure centers on a brilliant antiquities expert and a cunning art thief who team up to catch a ruthless terrorist who funds his attacks through stolen treasure. As they crisscross the globe hunting their target, they unexpectedly find themselves in the center of a 2,000-year-old battle for the cradle of civilization.

Starring: Sofia Pernas, Matt Barr, Katia Winter, Michael James Shaw, James Callis, Oded Fehr, Alicia Coppola, Tony Nash, Mohamed Marouazi

Pros:…This looks incredibly fun. I want to see Discount Nathan Drake fight pyramid robbing terrorists with Catwoman. This is a show for Aoqi. This is for Aoqi’s Indiana Jones/Tomb Raider/National Treasure loving heart. I am here for this.

Cons: *mumbling* I suppose there’s a reason that this genre doesn’t get a lot of play on network tv what with the budget and high degree of difficulty and all that. The possibility of it being bad is not low. Oh well, I guess we’ll just have to watch every episode to find out!

Premieres May 28th

ABC

Grand Hotel

Set at the last family-owned hotel in multicultural Miami Beach. The upstairs/downstairs drama revolves around Santiago Mendoza, who owns the hotel, and his second wife Gigi and their adult children, who enjoy the spoils of success. Based on the Spanish format, it explores the wealthy guests and the hotel’s scandals, secrets and escalating debt.

Starring: Demián Bichir, Roselyn Sanchez, Denyse Tontz, Bryan Craig, Wendy Raquel Robinson, Lincoln Younes, Shalim Ortiz, Anne Winters, Chris Warren, Feliz Ramirez, Justina Adorno

Pros: I have been talking about this damn show since the Fall TV Preview. I have waited patiently for the shirtless waiter with the agenda and the literal evil stepsisters. And now the time draws near. I AM READY TO SEE SOMEONE GET MURDERED WITH AN OAR.

Cons: Like I said in the Fall Preview, this is a fascinating adaptation of a hit Spanish show called Gran Hotel. The original series took place in 1906 Santander, so transplanting it to modern day Miami is…a choice. It’s not just an aesthetic choice. There are some plot points in Gran Hotel that are very much of its time. It’ll be interesting to see how closely the remake hews to the original and how they’ll translate it into a modern setting.

Premieres June 17th

Reef Break

The series follows Cat Chambers, a thief-turned-fixer for the governor of a stunning and seductive Pacific Island paradise. Impulsive, reckless and irresistible, Cat’s less-than-perfect past gives her an instinctive gift for understanding crime and criminals as she becomes enmeshed in fast-paced, high-octane adventures and island intrigue. Cat’s reappearance also makes waves for old friends, enemies and lovers, including an FBI agent ex-husband, her imprisoned crime boss, and a police detective lover who is in over his head. Each episode will be a character-driven cocktail of crime, surf, sex and sunshine, and for Cat, the lines between work and play have never been blurrier.

Starring: Poppy Montgomery, Ray Stevenson, Melina Vidler, Desmond Chiam, Melissa Bonne

Pros: I’ve loved a lot of the cast in other things they’ve been in (I see you, Australian Rory Gilmore and your penchant for setting things on fire.)

Cons: I don’t super understand what this show is about. I’ve read the summary over and over. It’s mostly just made me confused. No trailer or any sort of pictures of the show a month out from its airdate is…foreboding.

Premieres June 20th

NBC

Songland

The series provides a one-of-a-kind opportunity for talented up-and-coming songwriters to be exposed to and mentored by three music producers per episode who are responsible for today’s biggest hits. The series takes an inside look at the creative process and provides one winner per episode the opportunity to have their song recorded for a global audience by the chart-topping guest recording artists featured in their show.

Starring: Ryan Tedder, Ester Dean, Shane McAnally

Pros: Given how we tend to ignore The Voice and  American Idol winners of the last few seasons, we may have forgotten that we’ve gotten some incredible artists out of reality shows. This is a hard business to get into. If there’s something that gets songwriters in front of gifted mentors and people that will employ them, I’m all for it.

Cons: How interested one is in the songwriting process probably varies from person to person. And are the songwriters vetted for their song type beforehand or are they pretty much stuck with Meghan Trainor if they land in her episode? Also Ryan Lewis was never the problem with Macklemore and Ryan Lewis so how dare you, show?

Premieres May 28th

The InBetween

Cassie Bedford was born with a rare ability. She has visions … whether she likes it or not. Sometimes Cassie sees events that have previously occurred or will happen in the future. In addition, sometimes she encounters unsettled spirits who need her help. When her father, Det. Tom Hackett, and his new partner, former FBI Agent Damien Asante, need assistance solving a dark and puzzling murder, Cassie reluctantly agrees to use her abilities and helps solve some of the city’s most challenging cases.

Starring: Harriet Dyer, Paul Blackthorne, Justin Cornwell, Anne-Marie Johnson, Cindy Luna, Chad James Buchanan

Pros: There is nothing else on.

Cons: I don’t really have any sort of pro or con for this show. I’m not really feeling it but it looks fine. Interesting visuals and a good cast. But if you’re gonna do a show about a woman who sees dead people, Meg Cabot has a whole snarky ass series right there! It has a fully developed mediator universe with rules and everything.

Premieres May 29th

Pros: I was looking at the roster for the nine seasons of Last Comic Standing and there are some insanely talented and hilarious people on there. If they can find really quality people for this, it could be a good watch.

Cons: Puppets and YouTubers, you guys! That will be fun for everyone.

What Just Happened??! With Fred Savage

THE FLARE is based on author TJ Whitford’s sci-fi book series, “The Moon is the Sun at Night,” which has been a favorite of Savage’s since childhood. The book revolves around a solar event and its effects on Earth – specifically, the small, blue-collar town of Milford, IL – and slowly unfolds into a post-apocalyptic battle for human survival. The after-show will feature multiple segments, including authentic sit-down celebrity interviews, set visits to THE FLARE and interviews with the “cast,” as well as discussions with fans and more.

Starring: Fred Savage

Pros: Okay. Finding a coherent logline for this show was a fucking nightmare but the show proper sounds interesting once you get through the mishegoss. What Just Happened??! is a real aftershow for a fake Sci-Fi TV show called The Flare which is based off a fake book called The Moon is the Sun at Night. Got all that? That’s worth an episode or two right?

Cons: What’s the least lawsuit-y way to say this? Fred Savage is definitely an appropriate choice to play a fake Chris Hardwick.

Allegedly.
