Over the millennia places of incalculable worth to history have been lost to the sands of time, whether through deliberate destruction, carelessness or natural disaster. From the burning of the Library of Alexandria to the Anglo-French destruction of the Summer Palace in Beijing (pictured above), it’s a familiar story that’s done incalculable damage to our understanding of the past.
