Game of Thrones Rewatch: Season Seven. Episode Seven. The Dragon and the Wolf

Episode title: The Dragon and the Wolf

Director: Jeremy Podeswa.

Written by: David Benioff and D. B. Weiss

Summary: In the Dragonpit, Cersei, Dany, and their entourages meet. The Hound and Jon use the captured wight, an animated corpse, to prove the existence and nature of the threat posed by the White Walkers and their undead legions. Cersei agrees to help on the condition that Jon remain neutral between the queens however Jon has already sworn himself to Dany. Tyrion goes alone to confront Cersei, who has rejected Jaime’s urgings to reconsider. Cersei returns to the parley and agrees to send her entire army north. Cersei reveals to Jaime that she lied. Euron left for Essos to transport the Golden Company with which she will fight the presumably weakened faction that wins the Great War. Jaime abandons her and rides north alone as snow begins to fall on King’s Landing.

Dany decides to travel by sea and land with Jon, in hopes of garnering popular support. Theon decides to save Yara. Sansa summons Arya before the lords of the North and Vale, then stuns Littlefinger by accusing him of murder and treason, which Brandon corroborates. Finding no allies in the crowd, Littlefinger begs for mercy; Sansa thanks him for his lessons, and Arya executes him, slitting his throat with the Valyrian steel dagger.

Sam arrives at Winterfell with his family. Bran tells him that Jon’s real parents were Rhaegar Targaryen and Lyanna Stark. Sam reveals information from the High Septon’s journal: in secret, Rhaegar’s marriage to Elia was annulled and he married Lyanna. Bran views the wedding and Jon’s birth, learning the name Lyanna gave him: Aegon Targaryen. Bran determines that, as Rhaegar’s legitimate son, Jon is the heir to the Iron Throne.

Jon and Daenerys give in to their feelings for each other and the two have sex. The undead army arrives at Eastwatch; when the Night King appears, riding Viserion, Tormund orders the defenders to evacuate. Breathing blue fire, Viserion destroys Eastwatch and a section of the Wall, allowing the White Walkers to finally invade the Seven Kingdoms.

My take: What I liked about this episode is characters who haven’t had scenes with each other in years having these little conversations. Having everyone there at the Dragon Pit was pretty cool. Dany knows how to make an entrance. Of course we get confirmation of what we already have long theorized about Jon’s true lineage. I can’t believe that it has taken this long for someone to finally kill Littlefinger

Changes from the books: The Dragon Pit is shown to be outside the city walls

Nudity: Jon Snow’s ass

Locations on the Map: King’s Landing, Dragonstone, Winterfell, The Wall, Eastwatch, Oldtown

Death Count: Littlefinger by Arya, some members of the Night’s Watch at Eastwatch

Quotes: Sansa Stark: When the snows fall, and the white winds blow, the lone wolf dies, but the pack survives.

Sansa Stark: Thank you for all your many lessons, Lord Baelish. I will never forget them.

Jaime Lannister: When the fighting in the North is over, someone wins. You understand that, don’t you? If the dead win, they march south, and kill us all. If the living win, and we’ve betrayed them, they march south and kill us all!

So there we are! All caught up! The final season starts in two days on April 14th. What are your predictions? Who lives? Who dies? Who sits on the Iron Throne (if it stilk exists)?
