Box Office: April 5-7

With all the fun of potential lightning striking twice intros next week, Shazam! landed this weekend to a $53 million debut or $56,775,000 million including some special previews that were done previously to boost word of mouth. The film got an “A” CinemaScore rating but audiences and leaned male at 57% of the audience and an audience that was 55% aged 25 and older. That’s not bad overall but it needs to draw a little more on the other side for some legs. This opening is on par with Ant-Man and that should bring it to a $150 minimum domestic take overall with a lot of coming before Avengers: Endgame lands at the end of the month. It did well overseas as it brought in $102 million in 79 territories with China nabbing a $30.9 million debut.

The other film to open this weekend that’s of name is Pet Semetary, which is another in the midst of the current Stephen King revival period. It did $25 million, which is above the estimates for it a bit, on its $21 million budget. There’s definitely marketability for horror genre films year round but the spacing needs to be just right. It opened in a decent number of overseas markets to add another $17 million so the film is likely to be decent overall in terms of profitability.

The weekend saw Dumbo take a steep second weekend dive of 60%, putting this in Alice Through the Looking Glass territory now, while Us adds another $13.8 million to bring it to $152 million. Captain Marvel brings on another $12.6 million to bring it to $374 million domestic while its worldwide numbers are now at $1.037 billion.

The only other new film that came up this weekend was The Best of Enemies and that landed at 6th with a $4.5 million take.

Next weekend sees the launch of Hellboy from Lionsgate/Summit in 3,200 screens while Missing Link goes for the kids in 3,500 screens from United Artists. The comedy Little lands in 2,600 screens and Aviron brings out After in 2,000 screens. There’s also a slew of limited release films that you can see the trailers for below.
