Avocado Japanese Pop Culture Thread

Weekly Japanese Pop Culture Thread (April 3rd, 2019)

The spring anime season is now upon us, and more so than past seasons, it looks to be chock-full of sequels and remakes, like Bungo Stray Dogs 3.a(featured in the header image), Attack on Titan 3 Part 2, and a new Fruits Basket anime. But there’s also some new stuff, including some original properties. Here’s what I’m planning on checking out:

  • Carole & Tuesday. This is the new series from Shinichirō Watanabe, whom you may know from classics such as Cowboy Bebop and Samurai Champloo. Watanabe has worked in a wide range of genres, so I trust him to blend sci-fi, character drama, and musicals into something coherent. Plus, I’m always a sucker for stories that take on consumerism and automation.
  • Fairy Gone. Dark fantasy series that try to explore the horrors and consequences of war can be either really good or really trashy. Here’s hoping for the former, but I haven’t watched a fun train wreck in a while, so the latter might not be so bad!
  • RobiHachi. A comedic sci-fi adventure with a rabbit robot (robit?) Sign me up!
  • Shōmetsu Toshi. I’m not familiar with the source material, so I don’t know if the story is worth following until the end, but the premise of a young woman going on a journey to find out what destroyed her city is promising, even if there are shades of the competent yet pedestrian A.I.C.O. -Incarnation-. (There was probably a less pretentious way of saying that.)
