Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Mar. 29

Jeopardy! recap for Fri., Mar. 29 – Introducing today’s contestants:

– Andrew, a contract reviewer from Georgia, was born in England but has lived in the U.S. for 25 years;
– Natasha, a budget manager from Illinois, introduces Chicago to visitors; and
– Steven, a sports industry consultant from Georgia, almost knocked over Hank Aaron. Steven is a two-day champ with winnings of $57,201.

Steven got a real run for his money in this game, but thanks in part to a miss by Natasha on DD2 and a small wager by Andrew on DD3, Steven retained the lead going into FJ with $17,800 vs. $14,300 for Andrew and $12,400 for Natasha.

DD1, $800 – LITERARY GENRES – The Nebula Awards are given by the Science Fiction & this genre Writers of America (Natasha won $1,600 – she had $5,600 to wager, and this would have been a good spot to follow the guideline of going all-in on first round DDs.)

DD2, $2,000 – CASTLE ARCHITECTURE – 4-letter name for the innermost & strongest building near the center of a castle (Natasha lost $3,000)

DD3, $2,000 – QUARTZ & ALL – A form of quartz gave its name to this firing mechanism used in old-timey pistols (Andrew won $2,500 – he had $11,800 vs. $15,800 for Steven very late in the game, so at a minimum Andrew should have bet enough to take the lead.)

FJ – CHILDREN’S BOOKS – This 1883 classic ends with the words “A well-behaved little boy!”

Everyone missed FJ, which should have been good news for third-place Natasha. But instead of a small wager, she bet $7,400, too much to stay ahead of Steven when he lost the standard cover bet of $10,801. Steven survived with $6,999 for a three-day total of $64,200.

Triple Stumper of the day: The players didn’t take the big hint in the clue “This silty wind-blown stuff is 60 to 70% quartz, more or…” loess.

Making the layup: There was a $4,000 shift in Andrew’s favor from Natasha when she couldn’t quite nail the pronunciation of the tragic artist Modigliani, but Andrew did.
