Welcome! The purpose of this thread is to talk about all things related to the wonderful world of musical theatre. Each week (or so) I will post a thread with a topic/question for everyone to respond to. This is also a great place to mention any new musicals you’ve discovered and/or general recommendations for other musical fans. Heard/seen any good shows lately? Have any theatre news to share? Tell us about it!
Lately I’ve been revisiting musicals that I haven’t listened to in a few years, and it’s been an interesting journey. I’ve noticed lots of things about these musicals that I never noticed before. For example, when I was listening to Oliver! the other day I was really amused by the fact that several of the songs are “meta”. In other words, they know they are songs. With that in mind, the suggested topic this week is songs that know they are songs.
To give you an example, here are two songs in Oliver! that reference the fact that they are songs. First, we have “I’d Do Anything” an adorable song where Fagin’s gang of orphans sing about all the things they’d do for Nancy, Bet, and Fagin. Nancy and Dodger are quite literally teaching Oliver the song. It’s cute and the scene in the movie is very well done:
Another example can be found in “That’s Your Funeral”. I don’t know why, but I think it’s really amusing when Mr. Bumble informs Mr. and Mrs. Sowerberry that he doesn’t think their song is funny:
Alright, that’s all I have to say this week (short and sweet). Are there other musicals that have songs that know they are songs? And, as always, feel free to share any musical-related news!
